Gympie Speedway

Welcome to Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway site. A dirt track speedway located in Gympie, is the home of many current and former Queensland, New South Wales and National Champions.

Mothar Mountain Speedway is a unique Australian track in that its undulating 'kidney' shape incorporates a tight hairpin bend. The track's history dates back to the early 1960s. Motorcycles raced around the challenging layout in the early days. Today sees speedway racing in a variety of classes from ASCF Juniors, QSCA Juniors, Street Sedans, Super Street Sedans, Modified Production Sedans, Super Sedans and Formula 500s.

Spectators are well catered with 2 canteens for food and beverage, each with licensed areas, and several viewing stands. Sight lines and viewing is good from the many different points around the track - each having its own very different aspect.

In 2009, the track surface received a further topping of clay resurfacing, making track preparation managable, predictable and reliable.

Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway is one great adrenaline-filled thrill-ride of a night out for the whole family!

Subject: Sedan Stars Going for Gold

(Courtesy Chris Metcalf - SSA Media Release)

Less than a week after one of the most exciting Australian Super Sedan Championship finals in history, several of the key players in this memorable event are converging on Gympie this Saturday night (May 12) for the $3000-to-win Gympie Gold Rush at Mothar Mountain Speedway. Over 20 cars from three states will take part in the event, which doubles as round 11 of the Hotondo Homes Super Sedan Championship Series.

Having finished a fine third in the Australian Championship feature race in Brisbane on Sunday night, Matt Pascoe headlines the line-up for the Gold Rush showdown. Pascoe raced from position 11 to finish 3rd in Brisbane, enjoys a great record of success in Gympie and has won more feature events in Queensland this season than any other driver.

However, current Queensland champion Wayne Randall, who finished fourth behind Pascoe in the national title, won the Tasmanian Championship and the rich Apple Isle Grand Prix earlier in the season and, with more experience around the Gympie track than anybody else in the field, he is a very big chance to emerge victorious in the 30-lap Gold Rush final.

Meanwhile, two-time Australian titleholder Darren Kane will be looking to avenge the hard luck he endured in Brisbane last weekend that saw him exit the championship final on the opening lap after qualifying on the front row. With three state title wins this season, Kane is in rare form and will be very hard to beat if he can cast aside the disappointment of his national title result.

Of course, the man they are all chasing is the current series point leader in Ian Brims. A model of consistency all season, the New South Wales-based Brims holds a slender 7-point advantage over Pascoe in the race for the series crown. Other interstaters in the field this weekend will be Wayne Brims – nephew of the series leader and a winner of three state championships – and three-time national champion Michael Nicola. The inclusion of Nicola in the field adds an extra dimension to the event as the Victorian veteran is a big race specialist with a multitude of feature race victories to his credit.

Gympie will be well represented in the field with three local drivers out to keep the trophy in town. Despite piloting a 6-cylinder powered car against a field of V8’s, Gary Pagel outpaced many big name drivers to snare a top ten finish in the Australian Championship feature race, while Mark Pagel is a proven feature winner with a victory in Maryborough earlier this season earning him the right to be considered amongst the favourites this weekend on a track he drives better than any other. Completing the local contingent is youngster Dempsie Pails, enjoying a breakout season and currently sitting third overall in the series standings.

Also in the field for the biggest event of the Gympie speedway season is Jason Campbell, who finished 12th in the national title, and the Rockhampton-based duo of Craig Torr and former Queensland champion Matt Williams. Brisbane’s Steve Pearce, Paul Geary, Michael Hally, Barry Craft and Rodney Craft are also amongst the starters, while Bundaberg will be represented by Bevan Collins and Russell Dobson. Others chasing the Gold Rush crown include Jye O’Brien, Jack Childs, Kev Barkle and Gladstone’s Graeme Elliott, with David O’Keeffe making his first appearance for the season.

With a big support program including Production Sedans, Street Sedans, 4 Cylinders and Junior Sedans, the scene is set for a feast of speedway action on what is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most unique, and exciting, speedway circuits. Gates open at 3.00pm, with racing getting underway at 4:30pm. Super Sedans will contest three rounds of heats to determine the starting grid for the Gold Rush feature event.

Subject: UPCOMING RACE MEETING Gympie Speedway

12th May 2012

Hi everyone,

Well what an awesome meeting we had on 21st April 2012. Congratulations to Kristian Walker as the first ever Qld Production Sedan Title winner. It was a fantastic first title for Production Sedans at Mothar Mountain, and with the efforts of the three interstate drivers who really didn’t know what they were in for, each driver helped make this title a success as far as the Gympie Saloon Car Club is concerned and for the recognition of this division. Congratulations to Brody Thomsen in the Junior Street Sedan title – with all the Thomsen boys they have finally won a Junior Qld title!

As we’ve all caught up on some sleep it is time to look at our next meeting on the 12th May 2012 which will feature Super Sedans – we hope to take advantage of those staying after the National Super Sedan Title at Archerfield. Support divisions will be: Production Sedans, Street Sedans, 4 Cylinders and Junior Sedans. As a bonus we especially would like to invite back those Production Sedans to celebrate with the new Q1 for a last hoorah in the 2011-2012 season.

Nominations close: 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, 05th May 2012.

Many thanks,

Selina English, GSCC Secretary

Subject: PRODUCTION SEDANS QLD 2012 TITLE & JUNIOR STREET SEDANS QLD TITLE

21st April 2012

Queensland Saloon Car Association

Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway sprays alive on the 21st April 2012 with the staging of 2012 QLD PRODUCTION SEDAN TITLE & 2012 QLD JUNIOR STREET SEDAN TITLE

Two huge Title Events together on one big night of action packed dirt speedway racing, bringing the finest drivers in their respective classes together on one magnificent night of all out speedway perfection.

In the Production Sedan Title we have over 20 nominations with around half a dozen from NSW, which will make it a sort of State-Of-Origin type of challenge - NSWs against a dominant QLD pack, so Go the Queenslanders.

Production Sedans are very close to Street Sedans so most of our Streets fit right in. It is a National Class and passengers are optional.

This is the first time Production Sedan Qld Title has been staged at Mothar Mountain and the first of its kind in Qld, so we are obviously very honoured to be selected to stage this inaugural Title Event and excited about having another National Class Title race being held in Gympie.

Things in the back room have been busy with arranging the provision for the staging of the 2012 Junior Street Sedans Title, and Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway is yet again deemed the most capable and willing venue to stage this prestigious Junior Title Race. Defending Champion Sam Roza is back to have another go. A healthy line-up of contenders are in the stage for a wing-ding of a contest for the Silverware.

We are only a few days out from racing, so things are building up for another great meeting. And in an interesting development, recently re-crowned Qld Street Sedan Champion Tim Atkin is not nominated for the Production Sedan Title, which now opens the thing right up. Mothar Mountain is the place to be this Saturday evening as all lets loose.

In supports we have ASCF Junior Sedans, Super Streets, 4-Cylinders and Modified Productions - with Champions all over the place. Up at Mothar Mountain Speedway it's hard to look around and not spot either a current Champion, a recent Champion or some legend of the sport in and around the pits and on the track.

So you want to see some action with traction, some pedal-slamming, door-jamming, tyre-shredding racing for 2 Title Crowns on the One Monumental Night - THEN BEEE THERE!!!! - MOTHAR MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY - THIS SATURDAY NIGHT 21 APRIL 2012

Check for a downloadable Program for the 21st April 2012 Speedway Action at Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway for full fields of Nominations in all categories and the Racing Schedule

Our own local Street Sedan Champion Tim Atkin has successfully defended his State Title on the weekend of 10th and 11th March 2012. This brings him a total of 3 Championship Titles. Congratulations Tim on a super cool drive. Just keep on doing what you're doing.

2 HUGE NIGHTS - 33 STREET SEDANS - 1 TRACK

PLUS SUPPORT PROGRAMS

10th/11th MARCH 2012

GYMPIE'S MOTHAR MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY

Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway will Shriek and Shudder on the Weekend of the 10th & 11th March at the staging of the 2012 QLD STREET SEDAN TITLE

Unleashed upon the undulating purpose-built and spectacular dirt racing circuit will be a barrage of eager and enthusiastic Street Sedans and their drivers vying for that all-important prestige as State Title Winner.

In their normal races the Street Sedans are admired for showing great respect and restraint whilst providing a genuine spectators delight - normally, well at least they used to be normal.

As evidenced at several of our recent meetings the pack has gone wild, a bit feral if you will, apparently picking up something, something wicked off their long-wild cousins - the Modified Productions (of which little more needs be said as their status is legendary providing the local club with bragging rights over a long list of successful Champions at State and National levels for decades) - yes, it's something mysterious and dangerous and exciting and new.

The whole field of cars in heats and in feature races has been way outside of individual and group comfort zones and pushing their machines, drivers and crews to the extreme.

We have frequently seen races being so competitive that only half the starters have survived intact at the finish flag. We have seen plenty of spills and thrills and out of all the chaos we still got great driving and entertainment. Now this is an interesting development which puts into play the prospect that it becomes anyone's race for the taking - a come what may scenario if you please - a daring do when only the best most daring driver in machine will endure, to ultimately stand above all others in great esteem - to claim the prestige and the prize.

The track looks great, the infield is green after all the rain. The outfield on the hill is all dried out and ready to absorb a willing spectator crowd. The canteens are filled and provisioned with food and beverages. The scene is set...

Drivers nominated for the 2012 QLD STREET SEDAN TITLE are:

On Sunday we'll see the Junior Sedans and Modified Productions going hard at it to support the emergence of the 2012 Qld Street Sedan Champion. The field of Street Sedans holds a fistful of former Champions in the category.

There's some inexplicable buzz around on these Special Title Nights. A bit of apprehension, a whiff of exhuberance, a hint of mystery and a bagful of spirit - all conspiring to produce a spectacular exhibition of dirt track motor racing of the highest calibre.

The Drivers are fired up, the track is ready for racing. Get up off the couch, get on up to 'The Mountain' and get into the action... TWO BIG NIGHTS OF RACING. This Saturday Night. This Sunday Night.

Subject: Winners all over the place in a hectic night's frantic racing at the Mountain Saturday Night

In a big night's racing card, we had a few scratchings before any fuel was burned. There were also some late entries included in the program to compensate for the omissions.

Brandon O'Keeffe

One of the more flamboyant winners on the night was the former Junior Champion Brandon O'Keeffe who drove the drive of a Champion showing us some classic skills as he piloted his Street Sedan around the outside of the field to take his first Feature win in around 4 years. Nice job, and he'd have to be pleased with his preparation ahead of the Street Sedans Title here next month.

PICTURED AT LEFT IS BRANDON O'KEEFFE - COURTESY CRAIG ABBOTT/ORBITINGSTAR

It was a war of attrition with only 8 of the 21 starters in the A-Main still circuiting at the the finish flag. Doug Rigby and Darren Brady led the pack for a good portion of the race, but it was O'Keeffe as the big mover starting in 7th position who climbed through those ahead to get to 2nd position after 12 laps and 3 laps later struck the surprise blow on the high side of the track to make the lead which he held for the balance from Rigby in 2nd place, Brady in 3rd place, Daniel Henshaw in 4th place, Dion Wood in 5th place, Sarah Franz in 6th place, Aaron Sander in 7th place and Kurt Murdoch in 8th place. In a display of 'macho', Brandon climbed on top of his car post race and proclaimed his dominance like a showman of old. So there is a pretty big gauntlet he picked up and tossed back down... Can't wait to see the showdown next month when we have all the contenders in the Street Sedan Qld Title doing battle for the crown here at Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway. You can't miss that one - on the 10th and 11th March 2012.

The winner in the Modified Production category was Glenn Pagel who has been steady in his good form at many of his meetings across the last few months on this and other tracks. The Pagel crew has equipped his car with plenty of power and the blend with his superb skills around Mothar Mountain has Glenn returning consistantly impressive results and provides spectators with the flash they've come to expect from the racing at Gympie Speedway.

PICTURED AT RIGHT IS GLENN PAGEL - COURTESY CRAIG ABBOTT/ORBITINGSTAR

Glenn Pagel

Hot on Pagel's heels all the way was Gavin Lorensen, who has been in equally entertainingly good form of late. Rounding out the top five was Darren Pearson in 3rd place, Jamie O'Meara in 4th place and Scott Raymont in 5th place. Taking a rest on the weekend were Champion Modifieds drivers Todd Doyle who was getting his car back in shape following the NSW Modified Production Championships in Lismore on 4th February 2012 and Aidan Raymont who was taking a well earned break after triumphantly returning with the 2012 NSW Title in hand. Congratulations to all the local drivers who made such a dominant impact in NSW, especially to Aidan who stretched his lead out in the Title race to over half a lap from the second place at the finish line in the A-Main (a nearly 13 sec gap) - a spectacular and hard-to-achieve feat in the Modified's category at the Title Level of competition. What a drive!!!

Michael Learoyd

In the Junior Sedans, current Q1 Michael Learoyd made a good showing all through the afternoon and evening, and in the A-Main ran a patient race in behind an unlucky Patrick Brennan - who held the lead throughout the race until the last part where he got overtaken by a hungry Learoyd. Behind Michael Learoyd in 1st place, and Patrick Brennan in 2nd place, were Brendan Learoyd in 3rd place, Billy Duffield in 4th and Stephen English in 5th place.

PICTURED AT LEFT IS MICHAEL LEAROYD - COURTESY CRAIG ABBOTT/ORBITINGSTAR

In the Super Streets Steve Cook took out the A-Main from a determined Chris Pendry in another race of attrition where only half the field made it to the finishing line. Steve is a regular contender in every race he competes and is always in good cheer around the paddock and the pits. He takes that positive approach to the track and congratulations on a good win in the A-Main.

PICTURED AT RIGHT IS STEVE COOK - COURTESY CRAIG ABBOTT/ORBITINGSTAR

Steve Cook

2nd place went to Chris Pendry, Mitchell Slade finished in 3rd place, Kriss Warry in 4th place and 5th place Stephen-John Lahiff. It was good to see Jessica Raymont back on track for her first outing since her massive rollover a few months back. Good on you Jess.

MICHELE BLAVIUS AND SARAH FRANZ

The 'Women In Speedway' feature was run and it went off pretty well displaying some competitive drives that had their eventual winner of the night's Main race Sarah Franz hold out Michele Blavius. Best mates, Sarah and Michele were at it all afternoon in the heats.

PICTURED AT LEFT IS MICHELE BLAVIUS AND SARAH FRANZ - COURTESY CRAIG ABBOTT/ORBITINGSTAR

Tegan Jennings drove well in both the 'Women In Speedway' races and in her native Modified production class mixing it up well with the boys during the heats, placing 3rd, Selena English finished in 4th place. Tiffany O'Keeffe had a tumultuous night with her car taking all sorts of treatment, but she kept coming back again and again. In the A-Main she impacted heavily with the concrete. Fortunately Tiffany is okay, physically, apart from a few bruises, but the big shunt has reportedly shaken her a bit. We are sure she'll be back to her winning ways and we'll see her beaming smile around the pits soon.

MOTHAR MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY - THIS SATURDAY NIGHT - BEEE THERE!!!

And here we are just a month away from the Street Sedan Qld Title - with defending Champion Tim Atkin out on track this weekend, honing things just right. We wonder if there is anyone out there capable of beating him around Mothar Mountain on the big night???

Now there's the challenge. He's throwing out the big gauntlet - come and get it if you're game, and you better bring your game 'cause Tim has got his. Is there anyone out there brave enough to take up the challenge?

As of the other day there were about 25 nominations for the Title... so the odds are looking pretty good for our boy... The QSCA may be taking some last minute nominations, so you better get in quick if you want a crack at the Title, or maybe it might be safer if you stayed at home and played your XBOX... winner... get on up to the Mountain, the only place for the real deal - see it all live - right before your eyes. Yeah... And if you need any pointers on how to get around the Mothar Mountain circuit you can check out some of the in-and-around-car footage we got online (here).

Gympie Speedway's Modified Production Club Show

The Modified Production mania continues when we clean up, dust off and polish everything in readiness for the return of the mighty men and women of speedway who are preparing themselves and their machines for a cracker of a Club Showcasing. Superbly presented cars and driving talents will be on centre stage on Saturday 11th February 2012. We'll have Home Grown Champion drivers out in the field with hopefuls and successors carving out names for themselves. This is the proving ground where we get to see the shining stars of past, present and future together on track showing what they can bring.

The Modified Productions will be burning the gas hard in some flat-strapping, gear stripping, fast-track-frenzy around the famous Mothar Mountain circuit in a hazy inferno of lap tearing thunder. Modified Production Monster Madness at its most devasting brilliance! Right out there for all on show.

And if you thought that might be a whole lot of entertainment laid on fast and furiously - don't forget we also have the highly entertaining 'Women in SPEEDWAY' extravaganza. The glamour of our Women in Speedway out on track driving their race cars around our gorgeous circuit in a stylish display is sure to dazzle. Well... perhaps... maybe they'll just put on a really good show of how good they are at getting around our Mothar Mountain track. It's pure gold - entertainment at its most elegant... grittiest.
Women In Speedway

We also got Super Streets rev-ving up the Mountain in a Super Street Extravaganza. These machines rock. They're fast and they're like a younger cousin to the Modified Production with a whole lot to show. So they won't want to miss out on any of the attention. The Super Streets will be competing in Round 2 of the 'Tri-City Series' and the racing will be on!

We have the Junior Sedans fresh back from their adventure to the outback at the Australian Titles in the Northern Territory.

And lastly but certainly not leastly we have a huge field of Street Sedans out for a run with just one month away from their State Title, which is being staged here at Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway on 10/11 March 2012. The wild-bunch will be mixing it up in a frenzy of close-calls and seat-of-the-pants racing stuff.

We will have a full list of nominated drivers in all event categories up in here soon, so stayed tuned.

Congratulations to Todd Doyle for stretching the competition to breaking point and holding out, flat out to the end to deservedly take out the crowning glory of the 2012 Masondale Heavy Haulage Modified Production 'KING OF THE MOUNTAIN' event at Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway. The Modified Productions certainly lived up to their reputation for hard racing, with many cars dicing and duelling for position in the A-main.

Todd Doyle Q1

Gavin Lorensen qualified up front and inside with Doyle on his outside, Glenn Pagel in behind on second row with Brett Baxter on Pagel's outside, with the rest of the pack tucked in ready to rumble. At the drop Lorensen was eased out on top of 'Pagel's Corner' and Doyle, Baxter and Pagel slipped through. Todd Doyle's simple aggressive competitive style was again evident as he drove the wheels off his machine to first hold off a determined Brett Baxter, who succumbed 2/3 of the way home with a destroyed diff; and then heavy-weight contender and team-mate Gavin Lorensen entered the breach for the run to the finish, with Doyle unleashing the beast with a lap after lap slaughter of the track, which just could not be matched. Congratulations Todd in a great drive.

It was hard luck once again for Brett Baxter who always shows promise and is certainly building up some nice momentum in his latest machine, clocking some of the fastest lap-times on the night. Gavin Lorensen, a force to be reckoned, is about to get really dangerous with word a new car is just around the corner, so look out. In other hard racing, the new number 28 Ford from the Raymont Racing stable in the capable hands of Champion driver Aidan Raymont was an early casualty with a diminished clutch assembly which let go and sidelined the car for the night. Aidan then was assigned the car he drove to great glory over the past couple of years, but because he took a replacement car started each heat from the rear of the field. Qualifying into 7th position for the feature, Raymont drove superbly to finish up in 3rd spot behind Doyle and Lorensen.

4th place was Michael Shelford who had a stellar drive from starting down in 10th spot. 5th place was taken by the super-cool, quietly spoken Glenn Pagel who returned on the night with a rebuilt motor, and having had an early in-car warning-light scare in one of the heats, put things right for the feature. Pagel was right up there for the first handful of laps, then after an altercation, recommenced at the back of the field for a restart from yellow and climbed from 11th place up to 5th. Adrian Stott showed his recent consistently good form again finishing well, and going the distance to finish in 6th. Brendan Bayfield rounded out the field of finishes.

For a full results wrap see the official timing site MYLAPS for details.

In the 4 Cylinder Sedans James Elliot topped the field of very steely and reliable drivers taking out the A-main from Mark Kelly in 2nd place and local 4 cylinder freak Tim Weir in 3rd place. Tim had a great night qualifying up front for the A-main. Nice job Tim. Toby Cryer finished in 4th place with Hamish Redman in 5th. The 4 cylinders entertain with a good old reliable style of racing and Fay Jefferson was spotted way down out the back cooking up the BBQ for their club members at the end of the night.

In the Junior Street Sedans Brody Thomsen carded consistently good lap times through the night with the fastest of the Junior Street Sedans. Ryan Packer was pretty quick too with good results throughout the heats. The starting lineup for the Junior Street Sedan A-main in 1st spot was Brody Thomsen, with Ryan Packer on his outside, and Simon Walker tucked up into 3rd starting position. The rest of the drivers fell into line behind. Providing plenty of thrills and spills the Juniors made it to the finish post with the top three drivers holding their starting positions to go Brodie Thomsen 1st place, Ryan Packer 2nd place and 3rd place to Simon Walker and were the only cars to go full race distance.

In Street Sedans a huge contingent showered the mountain with quality racing all night long. Strong competive and clean racing heat after heat, lap after exciting lap. The overall winner of the A-main for Street Sedans on the night was regular Qld Title winner Tim Atkin who qualified out in first position. Jim Cowley had a ripper of a start jumping several positions to lead on the first time round, but Atkin was having none of it and regained the lead to circuit out in front the second time around. There those top two position stayed with their drivers going lap after lap until lap 17 when young Brad Yarrow who was having a cracker of a night drove up into 2nd position, having started 10th, and claimed another scalp. But the task was a great one for the young driver with only a couple of laps to go, and with the veteran Champion out front Yarrow had to be happy with his 2nd place. Jim Cowley finished 3rd, and Frank Packer 4th. The rest of the field travelled well with the next ten drivers going the full 20 laps - as follows Josh Arthur, Doug Rigby, Lester Wilcox, Tiffany O'Keeffe, Sarah Franz, Neil Keldoulis, Michele Blavius, Selina English, Aaron Sander and Bradley Jennings. Take note of the healthy numbers of Women holding their own up against the Male drivers.

A treat for all speedway fans will be the 'Women in Speedway' feature - returning to the Mountain for our next meeting on 11th February 2012. There'll be a whole bunch of Women drivers slogging it out on the track - so it will be a hoot to see.

'KING OF THE MOUNTAIN'

This Saturday Night - 14th January 2012

The Masondale Heavy Haulage Modified Production 'KING OF THE MOUNTAIN' event will bring the best of the best to the Mountain this Saturday 14th January for a demonstration of hard racing, guts and determination with the goal being ultimate MODIFIED DOMINATION. This is survival-of-the-fittest stuff, straight from the top shelf of the pool room. You just got to be there to see this.

Gympie's Mothar Mountain Speedway has a long-standing reputation around the country speedways for producing skillful race-hardened, and big-ticket winning Champions, especially in the Modified Production Class.

This is what stands the Modified Production Class apart from all others, especially in Gympie. The drivers battle not only the track and the invincibility of their machines but they must also draw on their individual and team strengths, possess a steely need to win, and in some cases even some have been heard quietly muttering for divine intervention in the hope that some 'cosmic force' will protect and propel their machines safely through those of their friends and enemies to eventually, as the end of their quest is reached, to be only the best out front - above all others - KING OF THE MOUNTAIN.

There are 20 courageous and valiant drivers nominated for the Modified Production KING OF THE MOUNTAIN.

They are as follows - Glenn Pagel G4, Darren Truin C18, Shayne Truin C2, Glenn Truin C91, Todd Doyle Q1, Craig Franz SC37, Gavin Lorensen G11, Aidan Raymont G28, Allen Nottage G68, Jason Reese G13, Michael Shelford SB54, Jamie O'Meara G26, Darren Lyon G36, Adrian Stott G23, Steve Cook C13, Brendon Bayfield M18, Scott Raymont G25, Brett Baxter G5, Tegan Jennings G22, Darren Pearson SC86.

May each go with goodspeed and fare thee well.
